HUBLOT at BASELWORLD 2017
THE BIG BANG UNICO SAPPHIRE
While coloured synthetic sapphires have been in existence since 1902, when they were invented by the French chemist Auguste Victor Louis Verneuil, melting sapphire is a complex and unpredictable process. Because its crystallisation process is unstable, it is difficult to obtain similarly coloured sapphires, even if they are produced simultaneously. Furthermore, bubbles and cracks can appear in the material, making the end result unsuitable for producing Big Bang cases.
But the main challenge is in the size. Thus far, no coloured sapphires exceeding 2 kg have been produced. However, Hublot has now gone beyond this threshold. By pushing the limits of engineering and chemistry, it has developed a sophisticated and costly process that has resulted in the successful production of a large, transparent sapphire of perfectly uniform colour.
Hublot heats aluminium oxide (Al2O3) — the raw material for sapphire — with a transition metal, chromium (Cr), at a temperature of between 2000 and 2050 degrees Celsius. The result is a coloured sapphire that retains all the original properties of a material which is ultra-scratch resistant, completely transparent and among the hardest in existence. The innovation extends to the colour — the first blue sapphire in the history of watchmaking.
THE CLASSIC FUSION ITALIA INDEPENDENT COLLECTION
“We are very proud to be able to continue this partnership with Italia Independent and Lapo Elkann, whose creativity and character never cease to surprise us. This new project was an extraordinary experience for us: putting Hublot’s capacity for technical innovation and willingness to experiment to the service of the House of Rubinacci—a monument to Italian elegance—and the incomparable style of Lapo Elkann. The Classic Fusion Italia Independent truly represents the fusion of three forms of expertise.” Ricardo Guadalupe, CEO Hublot
BIG BANG BRODERIE SUGAR SKULL FLUO
The Big Bang Broderie Sugar Skull Fluo is once again revisiting traditional materials in an original, modern way. This time with Bischoff embroidery from St Gallen. This ancestral craft has travelled across the globe and is entrenched within the world of fashion.
With its cutting-edge innovation, performance and creativity, internationally renowned Swiss brand Bischoff is a key industry figure. In its workshops in St Gallen, near Zurich, Bischoff’s master artisans created specially commissioned fluorescent embroidery on silk organza. Delicately embroidered with floral arabesque motifs and subtly revealing the ‘skull’ design that will adorn the dial.
TAGHEUER AT BASELWORLD 2017
G HEUER CARRERA HEUER-01 43 MM
Unveiled in 2015, the TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer-01 opened the doors to a new market. A 45 mm Skeleton Manufacture Chronograph with a contemporary sports design, and coming in at under 5000 CHF, it redefined the notion of value for money.
This year, the famous proprietary chronograph is being unveiled with a slightly smaller diameter of 43 mm, in a choice of three versions: intense black, deep navy blue and an elegant cognac brown.
After more than five years of continuous improvement and optimisation, it now offers a very high level of quality, while its production costs have been carefully managed to make it one of the very few 100% Manufacture Chronographs available for less than 5000 CHF.
TAG HEUER CARRERA LADY 2017
The Carrera collection is TAG Heuer’s flagship collection. Launched by Jack Heuer in 1964 as a chronograph, it is now available in a range of diameters with many different functions for both men and women.
This year, thanks to a new development, the case features a different construction. It is no longer punched from a block in the traditional TAG Heuer way – it is now modular and formed of 9 different pieces (case back, case middle, bezel, lugs and strap end-pieces), which paves the way for myriad possible combinations of almost endless materials, colours, treatments and finishes.
Link. A design that dates back to 1987. Its defining feature is the immediately recognisable bracelet, boasting the signature S-shaped links. It is both an iconic design and a standard bearer in terms of ergonomics and wearer comfort. Each link is rounded on the top, bottom and sides for an exceptionally smooth feel on the wrist.
In steel, with an elegant diameter of 32 mm, the new Link Lady now features a bracelet which is fully integrated into the case, whose horns have been removed. The bracelet still has a curved profile, and the finishes are even more sophisticated: the entire contour of the S radiates a highly polished shine, while the upper surface of each link is fully brushed.
I had such a great time at BASEL WORLD 2017 and wanna thank everyone who invited me and took their time to show me their newest collection. See you next year, so long! X
Audemars Piguet presented a new series of moving image and photographic works by Dan Holdsworth at the Audemars Piguet booth, designed by Sebastian Errazuriz, in the Collectors Lounge at Art Basel (16 – 19 June 2016).
As already mentioned, the lounge is designed by Chilean born, New York-based artist and designer Sebastian Errazuriz. The theme of the stand is based on ‘Water and Ice’. And when I asked him what was behind the idea of the design he answered:
“whats incredible, because of the snow and the ice Le Brassus for long time it has always been isolated. so for six to nearly eight months a year they were blocked out. so this notion that you are completely isolated was actually what gave them the time to develop their technology. they had nothing else to do. so this problem becomes actually something benefitial for them and for us. why not bringing back that driving force as a concept.Originally we wanted a qiant slab of ice inside this space. Audemars Piguet was interested, Art Basel was like: no way it is happening. so we started thinking how do we symbolize this idea in a more economically responsible way.”
The result of his idea is what you can see in the photos below. Sebastian created the design of the booth around the theme of ice, water and winter in the Vallée de Joux. I personally like the ice tank that you can see in the first photo the best. I can stare at it forever!
Another thing that I found out at the press conference was, that the design is inspired by one of Sebastian’s childhood memories. The memory of water dripping into a bucket and the distinct natural rhythm that this caused. Taking inspiration from the visual design codes of ice formations and the beautiful snowed winters in Le Brassus and the Vallée de Joux, the new collectors lounge features a more spacious and luminous design language that resonates with contemporary creative energy. The design reflects the clean purity of nature and the presence of time.
I really like the new Audemars Piguet booth and I could relate very much to the ideas behind the design by Sebastian Errazuriz. Above and below you can see the art deco inspired lamps that fit perfectly into the whole design of the lounge.
WHO IS SEBASTIAN ERRAZURIZ?
Artist, designer and activist Sebastian Errazuriz has received international acclaim for his original and provocative works on a variety of areas and disciplines. Tackling everything from political artworks to giant public art projects, experimental furniture to product design and women’s shoes to motorcycles, Sebastian’s work is always surprising and compelling, inviting the viewer to look again at realities that were often hidden in front of their own eyes.
in case you did not know about him you should def check his website and see his amazing design pieces. one of my favorite is the soup plate that does not need to be tilted to get the last couple of spoons of soup. another cool piece, that I like a lot, is the chop stick that has a fork on one end and can be either used as a fork or broken into chopsticks. besides these he designed really cools shoes but have a look for yourself >> http://www.meetsebastian.com
Inside the booth designed by Sebastian Errazuriz there were a very limited amount of watches in display and the beautiful art works by Dan Holdsworth. Unfortunately I did not have time to visit the gallery in ZH but I did see some of his work online and inside the collectors lounge.
ABOUT DAN HOLDSWORTH AND HIS ARTWORK
The details of a new series of photographic works by Dan Holdsworth has been premiered on the Audemars Piguet booth in the collectors lounge at Art Basel’s show in Basel. These photographic pieces explore the unique geological formations found in Audemars Piguet’s home, the Vallée de Joux in the Jura Mountains. By referencing the epic timescales by which these rock formations were formed, the works will invite the viewer to reimagine their relationship with time.
Holdsworth’s new moving image work will be accompanied by photographic pieces exploring the unique geological formations found in Audemars Piguet’s home at le Vallée de Joux. In parallel with the new works presented by Audemars Piguet in Basel, Holdsworth’s solo show, A Future Archeology, will open at SCHEUBLEIN + BAK, Zurich on 1 June, running until 2 September 2016. The exhibition will premiere new works from his Continuous Topography and Spatial Objects series, exploring the landscape of the Mont Blanc glacier using the same pioneering technologies to map out the fine detail of the region.
thank you Audemars Piguet for inviting me and organizing my interview with Sebastian Errazuriz. It was a pleasure to feature your booth on my blog. Llike every year it was a blast to be at Art Basel and get the chance to see so many nice things. thank you all! X

it is that time of the year again where Basel becomes super fancy, international and glamourous it is the time to see beautiful watches and sparkling jewelry! it is BASELWORLD 2015!
I saw this girl every morning since the very start of the fair and she always holds the Louis Vuitton sign and stands in front of the fair – after the third day I said hi so in case you see this I hope you like the photo I took of you.
spring is here! so many gorgeous flowers were arranged for the BASELWORLD fair. I love these flowers that you can see in the photo below. are those peonies?
and like every year here are the ladies in black and white that provide information. I asked them whether the dresses are comfortable and they said yes – thats nice! I heard that they are very happy to not wear the hat, like they had to, in the year before. 🙂
and then I fell in love with those red shoes designed by Christian Louboutin and Swarovski. read more about the shoes here <<
and now I wanna show you some nice photos how certain brands showed their watches at the BASELWORLD fair.
I really hope you liked my BASELWORLD 2015 impressions. have a lovely day! X
I saw something nice for you! this simple watch is perfect for men and women. I have already introduced this watch brand in a previous post – read more here >> I am a big fan of the BAUHAUS design and therefor I love the shape and design of the CITY watch – simple and sleek!
so you might wonder why the watch looks different in the photo above – thats because I switched the wristband, instead of the black I attached a brown leather band. a quick simple thing makes a big change!
soon I will show you an outfit where you will see me wearing this gorgeous CITY watch. stay tuned! xx
a watch brand from BASEL – isn’t that amazing?
I recently discovered these gorgeous watches when I was strolling thru Clarastrasse in Basel. Next to the Basilisk photography shop there is a shopwindow with some pieces of their collection. It was the first time I have heard of ADVOLAT and I really liked the fact that they are from Basel.
Let me tell you a bit more about ADVOLAT and their philosophy, thats what I found on their website:
I really like the BAUHAUS design CITY watch and the same watch can be worn differently – with a black watch strap or with a brown one. for CHF 49.00 you can purchase the brown leather watch strap and easily change it by yourself when ever you want. soon I will show you photos with the two different watch straps – a more elegant and a more casual version – stay tuned!
awww. my new swatch watch is called sweet me – its part of the pastry chef collection. I saw this collection for the first time in London during the fashionweek and I was amazed by the sweet colors and details. Swatch says they were inspired by sweet macaroon when designing this watch – and I can really see this relation. vanilla and raspberry – mmhhm!
its the most comfortable watch I have ever worn.. super light and such a soft strap made out of silicone – the perfect watch for summer!
